HOLIDAY TRAFFIC
—- - , TRAINS AND TRAMS. '' The holiday railway traffic yesterday was surprisingly.- light. Probably the number of people who made excursions by rail was not more than half the total for last New Year's Day. The traffic was not large enough to warrant; any extension of facilities. The decline was attributed by - railway Officers to the recent epidemic, which has made very many people unwilling to; undertake unnecessary journeys, by rail. . ' : The tram ,traffic- was' light during the morning, .owing .to .the uncertain weather. Early in the afternoon it became heavy, particularly on : the Lyall ' Bi'-y pud Seatoun lines. Very many Wellington people wanted to get to ; the seaside , in a hurry and . the . traffic' department ■had a busy time for an'hour. Most of the peqple returned early. ' ! Traffic during the early part of the evening .was hindered seriously. J>y blockages on important'lines. The mishaps made necessary diversions of traffic during the rush Hours <of the evening. ' ; The harbour ferry services were heavily laden throughout the .day. •
