A CHILL CHRISTMAS DAX

KEEN BLOW FROM THE SOUTH. The weather on Christmas Eve and yesterday was bv "no means ideal for those who regard the festive season as one for' open-air recreation and relaxation. After the few recent days of warm 6ummer weather it was reasonably anticipated that the weather during Christma'stide was more likely to be fine than otherwise, but the fact registers another meteorological disappointment to the many; of recent occurrence. ThroughoutTuesday there was experienced a strong southerly breeze with a keen edge and sullen skies. On the eastern side of the harbour there was a sharp hailstorm. Bain fell in town during tlie_ evening in desultory showers, and the wind became cooler and stronger through the night. The same raw southerly blew lustily throughout yesterday, pretty , effectively, keeping people indoors, and in most cases within feeling distance of a fire. The sky was overcast for the/greater part of the morning, but was bright and sunny. 1 during the afternoon. As a rule souther l lies at this time, of the year provide Wellington with the best of weather, but yesterday's blow was as chill as if it were mid-winter, and few ventured abroad unless compelled to do 60. There is a reasonable prospect that the conditions may change for the better to-day.
