The Hon. D. H. Guthrie leaves tomorrow for the Manawiitu. He intends to visit the returned soldiers' settlement at Kopane. The Hon. G. W. flussell returned yesterday from Christchurdi. He will spend Christmas in Wellington. Sir James Wilson has been re-elected chairman of the Manawatu County Council, with which body he has been identified for many years. In thanking the council for the confidence again reposed in him, he said' the position was not a difficult one, as the assistance of competent officials was a great help in the discharge of the duties of chairman. ' ! Tha «r.test issue of the "Wanganui Col; legiiin" gives details of the high distinctions gained by Flight-Major Keith Caldwell. Major Caldwell in 1914 was a pupil at the Wanganui Collegiate School. Upon leaving he-joined the R.F.C., being one of the first pupils to pass through the school at Koiiimarama. Since > then • he has gained the Military Cross, and has been given command of a squadron, while lately his services have been rewarded with the Distinguished Flying , Cross.
Cabled advice- dated December i has been received at the Base .Records Office, Wellington from overseas, stating that 21,323 Srgt.-Mechanic Raymond George Goldfinch, formerly of Feilding, and at ni'pspnt attach"*! to the Royal Air Koto, has ben awarded the Air Force Medal. As he is not a member of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force his next-of-kjn is not known at Base E.ecords. •Advice has been received at Base Records Office that 23,230 Patrick Norris, a returned undischarged soldier, died at the Wanganui Hospital on December 13, IMS, from influenza complications. Deceased was 26 years of age, and single, his next-of-kin being B. Dunstall (friend), 41 Riverbank, Wanganui. \fter almost 46 yews of service in the Union Bank of Australia, Mr. F. T. Morgan, manager of the Gisborne branch, will retire early next year. He has been given six months' leave, commencing on February 11, which will complete his term of service up to the retiring age. Mr. Morgan went to Gisborne in 1881 as accountant to the bank, and was appointed manager twenty-6even years ago, a position which he has filled ever since. He will be succeeded by Mr. Lawtord, of Dannevirke.
The Hon. T. M. Wilford, Minister of Justice, states that the transfers of Stipendiary Magistrates, consequent ou the demobilisation of military service boards, have been settled (says the "Otago Daily Times"). -Mr. .T. S. Evans, who was chairman of the No. 1 Canterbury Military Service Board, takes up' the "magisterial work in'the Nelson district again, with Marlborough included in his area. The West Coast has two Magistrates—Messrs. E. C. Levvey (with headquarters at Greymouth) and J. LStout (with headquarters •■ at Westport). Mr. J. E. Wilson, who was appointed as a relieving magistrate, goes from Greymouth to one of the Auckland suburban districts. At his own request, Mr. J. W. Poynton takes another Auckland suburban district. Mr. 1 , . H. Levien goes to North Auckland, and Mr. E. W. Burton takes up the new magisterial district in and near the King Country, with'headquarters at Taumarumii. Mr. E.' Paris is permanently stationed at Palmerston North.
liase Records Office at Wellington re-ports-.—Advice has been received from the Defence Office, AVaipukurau, that 10/4-130 Private Thomas M'Quinn, a returned discharged soldier, died in hospital on December 17. Deceased was a single man, 41 years of age, and his. next-of-kin is J. Dpole, friend, Raupare, Has-, tings. ■
