ME, LA 'lEOBE APPOINTED SUPERINTENDENT.

■ Mr. W. S. La Trobe, Director of the Wellington Technical. College, has been appointed to the new office of iiupenntendent of technical education for the Dominion, at a salary of .£7OO per annum. ' Mr. Lβ, Trobe is a New Zealander, having teen born in Ngaroto, in ino Waikato district, forty-eight years ago. He was educated at the Paterangi School, tho Auckland Grammar School, and Cambridge University. He spent ten years in England, and for eight years of the period ho was lecturing in the Engineering School attached to 'Gambridge, University, under Professor (now Sir James) Ewing, at present president of Glasgow University. Before he went to England Mr. Lα Trobe took the degree of M.A. in the University of New Zealand, with honours in mathematics and mathematical physics, mid at Cambridge lie took the mechanical science tripos, with first-class honours in parts one and two, and gained the MX deglee of the old university. It was while at Homo that ho was appointed to the position of director of the Wellington Technical College, a position in which he has for tho years he has held it enjoyed the full confidence of the board controlling the college, and of the public of Wellington, One of his first duties in his new ofhee will be to consider with the Director of Education (Dr. Anderson) the whole basis of the maintenance of technical schools, wif'h tho object of discovering somo scheme of ready application which may ensure at least as efficient control as now exists, and which may lessen tho enormous amount of clerical work now unavoidable in tho schools themselves mid in tlie office of tho Department. Mr. La Trobe will have general control of the administration of the technical branch of the • Department, .and he will a'iso 1)5 practically jhief inspector of technical schools.
