ORCHARD DISEASES

SCIENTISTS TO MAKE RESEARCH. . During his visit to Nelson last .week Dr. Reakes, Director-General of Agriculture, met the Cawthron Trustees, when one of the matters discussed was (he appointment of scientists to make research into orchard diseases. Some time ago the trustees decided to approach the Government regarding ■ the appointment cf two investigators for the Nelson district to make research into the causes and cures of orchard blights; and . offering .£'looo a year for two years towards the expenses, any results obtained to be thejoint property of the Government and the Cawthron Institute. Up to the present- time the Department does not know of any suitable parsons for the position in New Zealand or Australia, but Dr. Eeakes is of opinion that now the war is ended there will be no difficulty' in securing the, services of qualified men for the investigations. . • All fruitgrowers will welcome the appointment of scientists for the purpose mentioned: The fight against orchoird diseases is perpetual, and not always successful. Lengthy investigation and experiments on the spot by thoroughly qualified men may result in effective measures being discovered for com'bating the fruit diseases, to the immense financial benefit of the Nelson province.
