YACHTING

9 A- meeting of the committee of the Port Nicolson Yaoht Club was held on Thursday evening. The new club course round the Pin-' nacle buoy has been the subject of a great deal of criticism both from members and from the section of the public u'ho gather to witness the races from the Clyde Quay Wharf. The principal objection is that spectators can only see the' yachts minutes after the start and a few minutes before the finish. In view of the public interest' in these events the committee have decided to seek permission o£ the Havbour Board to lay a buoy on Somes Rock, some half mile eouth-west of the Somes Island lighthouse. If the required permission is granted the course is to be from Clyde Quay Wharf, inside the Jerningham Buoy, passing the Somes Rock to tlio eastward, thence to the club i buoy at Koro-Koro, back to the Jerninghain Buoy, finishing at the Clydo Quay wharf. By adopting this course the yachts will l>e in view of spectators throughout the race, A number of badges of the Port Nicholson Yacht Club and of the Arawa Sailing Club were received from Mr. Eobort Turnbull. These were the property of his brother, the late Mr. Alex, Turnbull. A cordinl vote of thanks to Mr. Turnbull was passed. Considerable interest is already being exhibited in the veterans' race, which the committee has fixed for January'll. A number of the old giants of tho sport, now retired, are being communicated with. A welcome was tendored by tho Commodore on bchnlf of the club to Mr. G. Hammill, one of the ownors of the Ailsa. Mr. Hammill has just returned from over four years' activo service. Tho committee have communicated with the Eastbourne Council in referenco to a proposal to hold a regatta at Day' 6 Bay on Anniversary Day. If the council can see its way to co-operate in the matter of their ferry service a very interesting and enjoyable day is anticipated.
