WHY A MILK TRUST?

Sir, —"Wainui-o-Mata," in answer to my former letter, makes one strong point, and one only, in favour of the municipal control, that is, the block system of distribution, but tho disadvantages far outweigh the advantages. Iwonder how he would feel ono morning if the whole of the council's milk distributors were out on .etrike, or running a slow policy like unto the recent tramway episode. There are many small farmers distnbntin" their own mill; and working for themselves, which is the best guarantee that they will not go on strike. The sine of the milk vendors may havo been grievous in the past, but many of the offences committed have not been by the vendors, but by their employees, and there is no guarantee that every em ; plovee that tho City Council may have will he any more competent or honest than every 'employee of the present milk vendors. Again, many of the faults put down to the retailers for sour milk, etc., are largely due to the consumers' neglect and carelessness in want of proper treatment of the milk when it comes into their hands. Improperly scalded milk vessels and improper places lor keeping tlie niilk when received are largely responsible for the milk troubles for which the vendor gets the blame. By all means let the City Counnl run it* milk scheme, not as a trust, but in competition with other veiidors.-I am, ctC " ' NO MONOPOLY.
