HEROIC RESCUE

FROM A BURNING TANK. A remarkable story is told of the heroism of an American sergeant named Waaler in the recent fighting at Le Catelet. Waaler was in charge of a machine-gun crew when he saw four wounded men lying- out in the fire-swopt open: ■ Accompanied by two volunteers from his team,' 1 he went out and carried them in. Ono was a British tank officer whose tank had been set on fire by a shell and who had broken his leg in escaping. The 1 others were two British soldiers and an American non-commissioned officer. Learning from the wounded officer that there might still be people in tho burning tank, Waaler went out alone, refusing to let anybody accompany him because of tho risk. Dodging from cover to cover of the bullet-raked ground, he reached the blazing tank. With his handkerchief to his nostrils he got into the interior. Here ho found two living men incanablo of holping themselves, and one dead. With superhuman courage and devotion ho got them to a place of safety where stretcher-bear-ers could reach them.
