BERHAMPORE INFLUENZA CENTRE
rfr— The final meeting of the Vigilance Committee of the Berhampore district was held in the Masonic Hall, Berhjmj'ore, on Saturday evening. The report 6tated that the committee's operations, began on Saturday, November 16, and the hall was finally closed on December 4. It was fully realised by tho Vigilance Committee that prompt and effective measures liiul to be put in operation, and the members' entered into the work wholoheartedly. The promptness with which mediciues, disinfectants, and the machinery necessary, for the inhalation chamber were supplied, considerably facilitated the committee's activities. For the first fortnight tho chief stress was felt, and then matters eased considerably. The work was organised in departments with men and women in charge of them—inhalation, disinfectant, medicine,' food, sanitation, scout, motor, and secretarial. A fund for needful help was openod, and this proved to be most useful. The sum of .£33 10s. Id. was received in donations for the Urgent Fund, and sales of medicine, etc., brought in .£27 lis. 9d., a total of JCCI 2s. 1(1. in receipts. Expenditure amounted to only £19 6s. -2d., leaving a balance of JMI 15s. lid. It was suggested .that in future all cases of-influenza and contacts should be isolated, and that much good would bo done if the new provisions of. the Public ; Health Act were put into immediate action. Reports from the various officers showed that 865 parcels were, distributed to 17C families, and 415 items of food were supplied by 102 people.' / The chairman, in his remarks, said that words failed him in expressing his highest appreciation' of the faithful people who brought .goods regularly. The loyalty and kindness shown by tho people' of the district made him feel proud of their noble efforts. It was decided that • the committee should not disband, but hold itself in readiness for future work if needed. A special vote of appreciation of the efforts of the executive officers was passed; Special thanks are duo to Dootors Perkins, Kemp, and Line, to Sisters of Compassion, and the ladies and gentlemen of the district for untiring attention to duty; to the commercial travellers! for motor-curs and supplies; the Island Bay Committee for assistance; and to tho Boy Scouts for smart and efficient work.
