SURPRISE PACKET SCHEME POSTPONED. On account of tlio epidemic tho Wellington Commercial ■ Travellers and Warehousemen's Association has decided to postpone its hip eurpriso packet scheme in aid of tho 'Mercantile Marine Fund until March 12, 13, and 11. This has been made necessary owing to tho disorganisation of business generally by the recent visitation, now happily pussing (way, and in tho second placo by tho intervention of tho Christmas and New Year holidays. Tho travellers wish it to be known that everything raised by means of the scheme will bo handed over to tho fund intact—without cost to anyone outside the association. Free carriage by rail and sea is being given all goods donated to tho fund, and tho Wellington Harbour Board,, in addition to contributing the sum of '.-CSOO, is storing all goods free of charge, and is allowing the use of M Shed for their distribution. Already the association has received for prizes'five sections of land (one of which is valued nt .£100), Avar loan certificates, niifl two Shetland ponies. Harbour boards and mercantile firms in both tho North and South Islands iiro contributing liberally to the fund, which is to benefit the, dependants of those who suffered in keeping overseas commerce alive during tho most perilous time in tho history of the Empire.
