The Bon rd of Trade, in conjunction with tho Board of Kdiicntiou, have with expert advice framed a scheme for the. establishment of a Uritish Institute of Industrial Art with the object of raising Ihe standard of design and workmanship of IlritMi designers, craftsmen, nnd manufacturers, and of stimulating the demand for such works. . The methods by which it is proposed to achieve the objects of (he institute include: A permanent exhibition in London oi work of n high standard. A selling agency attached to the exhibition and a purchase fund for securing for the State selected works. Establishment of machinery for bring- ■ iug into closer touch designers, art workers, and manufacturers. Provincial and travelling exhibitions. An independent selection committee is to bo constituted, which will approve of the particular work to"be shown. It is intended that articles of craftsmanship not intended for multiplication and trade products mechanically produced shall both bo eligible for exhibition, and thero will probably bo two sections of the exhibition for articles of craftsmanship and trade products respectively. It is not at present intended that thn exhibition shall bo actually opened until after tho wnr, but all preparatory steps aro being taken so as to avoid delay when jwaco has been restored. The schemo has been framed and will be worked in close co-operation with the Council of the Royiil Society of Arts.
