THE RAILWAYMEN'S BONUS
Sir,—Please grant me a few lines in your valuable paper to congratulate the Hon. the Minister of Railways on the stand he has taken up regarding the railwaymen's bonus, although I consider the bonus should havo beon an increase in wages. However, this is my point: Ho has granted Is. all round in tho second division per day. But one class of the second division are'not satisfied, and aro going to take action. This is the Enginedrivers and Firemen's Association. They want more. Now, I consider theso men the best paid in New Zealand. They have no trade or special learning of any sort. They cannot repair or take any part in making an engine, except as a labourer, and in slack seasons when thero is not enough to keep all drivers busy on trains they are (.mployed about engine sheds or yards cleaning up, whitewashing, cleaning pits out, etec. They have not served auy time to a trade, and are well paid for their labour. These are facts, and cannot be denied.—l am, etc., A.S.R.S.
