BOROUGH AMALGAMATION
A TEMPORARY HALT.
On account of the influenza- epidemic, which has occupied the attention of all local bodies for some six weeks past almost to , the exclusion of other business, the matter of the proposed amalgamation of Onslow and Karori boroughs with the city has undergone a temporary eclipse. The question, however, is not being forgotten, and a meeting of the Onslow Borough Council has been convened for £his evening for the purpose of further considering details in connection with the approaching linking up with the city. In the case of Karori there has been no joint meeting of the councils or their committees so far. The sub-committee (Messrs. James Ames and Charles Collins) appointed by the City Council to secure the necessary data ab'ont tine borough's affairs have concluded their work, but the epidemic has so far stood in the way of further negotiations. Speaking to a Dominion reporter yesterday, the Mayor of Karori (Mr. B. Q. H. Burn) said that he had a perfectly open mind on the subject of amalgamation, but the position of the borough differed considerably from that of Onslow, inasmuch as Karori had a good deal to offer which Onslow had not. For example, the Irorough had- laid down the tramway line from the deviation (the boundary), and the line would probably have had to bo constructed by tho city as far as the cemetery *had the 'borough not undertaken the. work. That was a very valuable asset, and as far as the cemetery at least it was an integral part of the city system. Then the council had a well-equipped metal quarry, and a plant for turning out its own concrete blocks for kerbing and channelling, some miles of which work had been done. Tho borough, too, had a park second to none in Wellington. So that, viewing the situation as a whole, the borough, whilst prepared to negotiate with the city on a fair business basis, was not inclined to come cap in hand to the City Council and" ask to be .taken in.
