The tunnel route was mentioned in connection with the .pidemiu at Hataitai at a meeting of the committee on Saturday night. The chairman regretted that doctors and ambulances had wasted valuable time— how valuable he was not prepared to say—in having to reach Hataitai, via Newtown and Kilbirnie, or via Oriental Bay and Rosencath. A patient living near the tunnel at the Hataitai end had been taken'in the e.irly hours of the tiiorninjr via Kilbirnio and Newtown to the Normal Hospital at Thorndon. The Wellington College Hospital, a matter of a few minutes, through the tunnel, had to.be approached in the same way. The population of Hataitai alone was about 2000, and ho felt that now the war was ovor the City Council would lose no time in improving the existing conditions.
