Plunket Society. The monthly meeting of the Eoyal N.Z. Society for the Health of Women and Children was held in the Plunket Rooms ou Thursday. There were present Mrs. Gordon Ponsonby (in the chair), Mesdames P. B. Chapman, Luke, Tythe, Brown, Ward, C- Richardson, Misses M'Lean, Cable, Kirkcaldie. and Barnett. Apologies were received from Lady Stout, Mesdames Massey, Russell, W. Nathan, Tripe, Kirkcaldie, and Miss Inglis. Before proceeding. with the business'of the meeting, a vote of sympathy and condolence was moved to Mrs. W. P. Massey and Mrs. M'C'aiv, of the Lower Hutt. During the absence of -the president, Mrs. W. P. Massey, Mrs. P. K, Chapman has promised to preside. Nurse Mitchell read her report, and as last month has l>cen a particularly sad one owing to the prevailing epidemic, the Plunket nurses had been'called upon to assist in a number of most distressing cases. Visits paid to homes wero 254, visits to the rooms . 227, new cases 44, partially breast-fed babies 14, solely 17, artificially 13, letters received 13. Nurse Seaton has returned 10 duty after four months' holiday on sick leave. She was <ible to visit the Kelburn Home for sick babies. The society does not meet next month, as most of the committee will 'bo out of town. Miss Grace Kirkcaldie has donated a laifre set of scales to the rooms. The secretary and Lou. treasurer acknowledge the following subscriptions:— Mrs. Solomon, £1 Is.; Mesdames Brown, 10s.; Mrs. Rough, ss. j Paul, 2s. 6d.; from the War Relief Association to the material fund; Mrs. Ponsonbv, 10s.; Mrs. Ward, 6s. The next sewing bee is on December 11, at 40 Hobson Street. It is' hoped members will atteud, as a great many garments are still wanted. The society would gladly welcome f-esh subscribers; ss. a rear is payable to Mrs. C. Richardson, Selwyn Terrace. It is the intention ■ of the Plunket Society to make an appeal for funds to cany on the work successfully early in the] New Year. Y.W.C.A, Notes. The diminished'groups of the clubs and hostels of the Y.W.C.A. have swelled out again during the past week. From the number beiik reduced to 25 girls in the rest and luncheon rooms at midday there havo been over 70 in attendance' again, all looking well and happy. The girls in residence at the hostels who wera ill all made good recoveries, and have convalesced now. There ivere only one or two serious cases out of all the number who were attacked by the epidemic. The Macdonald Crescent Hostel staff fell victims to the epidemic, while at the Brougham Street Hostel only tho matron was ill. The staff difficulties were adjusted at the Mcdonald Crescent I.W.C.A. by the splendid co-operation of the girls, who divided up all the work of the; two houses between them, and proved their efficiency in household affairs. Many of the cssociation members have worked valiantly as' V.A.D. epidemic helpers. In Christclrarch and Duucdin parts of the Y.W.C.A. are closed, and in Auckland tho handsome new building, tho gift of the public, was used as a children's hospital, i All Y.W.C.A. Clubs hope to resume their activities next week. The Lyric Club will meet for.enrol practice on Monday, when all members are asked to be present. All members of the Y.W.C.A. Savings Club are specially invited to come along to the club rooms on Ihursday evening to Teceive the. money they have 6aved during tho past year, and to join with the other members in an evening's ontertainment'. Tho visitors to the factories will provide the programme, and refreshments will be served by the Y.W.C.A. Social Service Committee. All girls and young women are invited to. the service to be he'd to-morrow afternoon at 4.15 o'clock at the Y.W.C.A.", and to stay to the tea and social hour following. An address will be given by Mrs. M'Clay dealing with things hard to be understood in the light of present 'day events. Miss Irene Webb, of Talavera Terrace, Wellington, is leaving for London by the Remuera next' week. Miss Nan Taylor, of the "Peg o' My Heart" .Company, has earned golden opinions in Wellington during the epidemic. Sho has been nursing patients in the Roseneath-Oriental Bay district, and as there is no prospect. • yet of a steamer leaving for Australia, she is now nursing at the Children's Home. Many in Wellington will hear with deop regret the news of the death of Mrs. C. B. Smith, of Hamilton, which occurred there on November 27. . Mrs. Smith (a daughter-in-law of Mr. Christopher Smith, of Unental Bay), was the eldest daughter of Mr. J. Chnrlesworth, the well-known Wellington architect, and lived with her parents for many years in Oriental Bay. AVbout five or six years ago she married Mr. Charles Bwhop Smith,. and later settled at Hamilton. The deceased, who was only 31 yearß of age, leaves two little'children.
The "British Australasian" of October 3 states that among engagements recently announced in Great Britain was that of Captain H. Westmacott, of Timaru (N,Z.), to Miss Jean Campbell, of Chrietchurck The Taranaki branch of the Women Teachers' Association is protesting against tho action of tho Taranaki Education Board in recommending increases in the salaries of male teachers, claiming that the results of the teaching by the women teachers were quite ecrual to those obtained by the men. The board has decided to reoeive and acknowledge the communication. A London correspondent writes that Lieutenant Hector Bruce Mackenzie, N.Z.M.C., eon of Sir Thomas and Lady Mackenzie, was. married to Miss Elyn Caroline Nioholls. only daughter of Mr. George Jasper Nicholle, late Judge of the Indian Civil Service, and Mrs. Nicholls, of Bideford. The ceremony was performed at St. Stephen's Church, Gloucester Road, by tho Rev. Canon H. D. Burton, N.Z.E.F. The bride, who has been a V.A.D., worked at the No. 2 New Zealand General Hospital, was given away by Mr. L. Marshall, 1.C.5., and worse a dress of white satin with an overdress of georgette and silver. Her veil was of Limerick lace, and her ornaments included an old Irish gold and sapphire necklnco. Miss Hazel Buckland and Mies Muriel Marshall were tho bridosmaids, dressed in champagrio-col-oured charmeuso and georgette, with black picture-hats. Sub-Lieut. Charles S. Clark, R.N.V.R. late N.Z.F.A.), was best man. Those present included: Sir Thomas and Lady Mackenzie. Miss Mackenzie, Mr. and Mrs. B. Howard Ellis, Mr. Clutha Mackenzie, Mrs. Jasper Nicholls, Lieutenant-Colonel Bernard Myers, N.Z.M.C, Mr. and Mrs. L. Marshall, and the Misses Sybil and Florence Marshall. Mies Stott, matron of the Wellington Hospital, is reouperating at the Maoarthy Home after an attack of influenza. The executive committee of tho Lady' Liverpool's and Mrs. Pomare-'s 'Maori Soldiers' Fund thank tho Champion Co., Ltd., for their gonerous Rift of three largo tins of sweets und 45 large cakes of chocolates for tho Rarotongali Maori soldiers on their trip l'ome last week.
