THE PORT YEAR

INTERESTING FIGURES

FOR THE LAST PHASE OF WAR-TIME

We have received from the Wellington Harbour Board a summary of statistics ! dealing with tho shipping activities and the quantity of general goods and primary products handled in the port of Wellington during the year ended September 30. It shows that whilst an increase was recorded over tho previous year in the tonnage of goods passing over the wharves "(inwards and outwards), the quantities of our primary products showed a decrease all round, obviously due to the increasing shortage of shipping tonnage. The decrease in that regard amounted in numbers to 122 vessels, representing 80,371 tons. Whilst there was a falling oil', as compared with the previous year, of 131 steamers which worked the port, an increase of nine sailing vessels is recorded.
