Captain D. Cossgrove,-Director of Recruiting, is at present suffering from an attack of influenza, but hopes to resume his duties about Monday. Mrs. H. Dunstall, of Victoria Street, Lower Hutt, has been informed by the Minister of Defence that her son, Gunner V. A. Dunstall. had been awarded the Military Medal. He went away with the Seventh Reinforcement in October, 1915, and has been continually at tho front. He was wounded on August 2/ last, in the left leg, and latest reports indicate that he is doing well. A Press Association telegram from Hawera yesterday recorded tho death of Mr. G. P. Raymond, aged 98. Deceased arrived in Wellington in 1852, and later settled in Canterbury, where he, was farming some years. Deceased enjoyed good health until a few weeks ago. The Commissioner of Police has r& ceived information that Constable It. W. Pettit died at Taihape yesterday. Prior to joining tho police force in 1912 the deceased was in the Post and Telegrapli Department. He was a married man with two children. Mr. P. Fraser, M.P., is recovering from an attack of influenza, and hopes to jbe about again on Saturday. Tho Public Service was well represented at the funeral yesterday morning of Mr. Walter Gollan, secretary of the Prisons Board and chief clerk of'the Justice Department, who succumbed to complications following influenza. Amongst those who attended were Sir Robert Stout (Chief Justice and President of the Prisons Board), Mr. C. E. Matthews (permanent head of tho Prisons Department), Mr. C. B. Jordan (Un-der-Secretary for Justice), Mr. M. Hawkins (Deputy Inspector of Prisons),' Mr. Miller (general secretary of the Public Service Association), Mr. L. T. M. Bodley (brother-in-law of tho deceased), and Messrs. G. Finn, W. R. Plinnner, F. Lyall, J. N. Grant, G. Living, and S. Stafford (representing the Khandallah Bowling Club, of which Mr. Gollan had been an active member for somo years). The service was conducted by the Rev. James dimming.

Mr. L. G. Pctcholl, of the National Bank, Invercargill, died on Sunday.

The 'late .Mr. Charles T. N. Trqwer, who died recently at Wakefield, 'was about the fourth 'European born in the Nelson district.

' The death of Mr. George D. Cochrane, oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. David Cochrane, Invercargill, is reported from Christchurch. The late , Mr. Cochrane was for a number of years sub-account-ant at the Southland Frozen Meat Co. A few months ago ho was appointed accountant to the North Canterbury freezing Co. • ,

Amongst the victims of the influenza, epidemic wos Mr. Henry Richard Waldegrave, who passed away at Palmerston on Tuesday. Tho late Mr. Waldegrave, who was only 30 years of age, was the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. 11. Walde : grave, of Park Road, and was a wellknown athlete, being one. of the original members of the Kia Ton Football Club. He enlisted.in the early stages'of the war, and saw service on Gallipoli, being subsequently invalided home. For some time he was engaged in farming tit Awapuni with his brother, Maurice, who is still on active service.

Amongst the latest victims of tho epidemic at Otaki are Airs. 11. Chiimiingts, wife of ihc Levin Borough engineer; Mrs. Malcolm, wife of Mr. Alexander Malcolm; Mr. R. S. Young, of Ohau; and Mr. Leonard Walford, porter .at the Otaki railway station.

Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm M'Donald have died at Pahiatua leaving two little orphans. Mr. Leonard Mexted and Mr. George Harvey aro also amongst the latest victims of tho epidemic.

Captain D. J. Watson, who was formerly a member of the Wellington Harbour' Board and secretary of tho Mer* chant Service Guild, arrived in Wellington yesterday by the link's Company s cargo steamer lvurow, from San Francisco. As officers were short at San Francisco, Captain Watson joined tho vessel for tho trip.

Mr. Gcorgo Frost, chairman of tho Reserves Coiiimittco of the City Council, and chairman of tho Technical Education Hoard has been asked o become a candiof Mr. A. It. Hindmarsh, and will probably decide to contest tho seat. If Mr. Frost comes out it will be as-an independent, owing no allegiance to.any political party.

Mr. Roderick Sowman, who left Nelson ten months ago to ■ bike up a position in {Jhriatcliui'uh, died on Wednesday from influenza. He leaves a widow and live children in Nelson, the youngest being about three months old.

The funeral of tho late Mr. A. 11. 11. Stevenson, formerly Assistant Collector of Kates for the. City, but lately Assistant Executive Officer in the Munitions ntul Supplies Department, took place, yesterday morning. Tho service at tho graveside at the Bolton Street Cemetery was conducted by the Rev. C; I'. Askew, and there was a large attendance of tho friends of tho deceased. Among those ■present were Messrs. A. 11. Miles, Alex. Macintosh, Sidney Kirkcnklic, and George Wilson (members cf tho Munitions and Supplies Board), Major Ostler (Director of Supplies and Transport), Captain King (Assistant Director, representing "Major M'Cristcll, Director of Equipment and Ordnance Stores), Mr. A- M, Adams (Chief Executive. Oflicor of the Munitions and Supplies Department), Air. W. Wilson (Treasury Department), Ah'. R. 11. Stephens (secretary of and representing the Coal Trade Branch of tho Munitions Department), Mr. A. J. Pctheric-k (secretary of the Wellington Central Chamber of 'Commerce), Mr. J. W. Ellison (oxSuperintundent of Police), Mr. John (;;:.i;>.>k' ila-le Collector of Kates), and Mr. B. van Staveron. The Wellington City Council stair was well represented, amongst those present being Messrs. .1. R. Palmer (Town Clerk), R. Tait (Deputy Town Clerk), 11. L. Godber (Collector of Hales), 11. Tail: (Superintendent of Fire Brigade), .1. M'Bcan (Clerk of Committees), and 11. Baillie (Chief Librarian). Tho pall-bearers were Messrs. Sommerville, Wilton, Moore, and Skegg (representing the Wellington Centre or the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association) and .Messrs. F. Johnson and 11. Caverhill (City Council's Rates Department).
