<£14,500 HANDED TO THE PRIME MINISTER,
The Prime Minister was waited ujwn ; yesterday nfternoon by Captain W. <le'R. j Barclay, treasurer of the "New Zealand ! Tributo to Franco" Fund, who handed ; to Mr. Massey a cheque for .£7450 pay- I able to Madame Carnot, president of the j French Red Cross, and also a cheque ! for .£7050 payable to the Minister for Foreign Affairs in Paris for distribution , to French orp'hans, maisons claires, and ; blind soldiers. This represents a total ; contribution of .£14,500, and is the first i instalment pnyable from the "New Zca- | land Tribute to France" Fund. The term, "maisons claires" is used to' denote.,. : special institutions where French people . have cared for the orphans of soldiers i wlio have been killed on -active service or > whose father is at the front and mother j is dead. These houses have been opened j for the relief of sycli children, and are scattered all over France, .being mam- I taineiV by voluntary subscription. < Mr. Massev has arranged for the con- j tribution to be cabled immediately to the ; High Commissioner for New Zealand, ; who will arrange'for payment of the re- , niittanco in Paris. , .. i
