THE CIVIC HOTEL

A CHANGE OF CONTROL. ' The dispensing of fermented and spirit' uous liquors (under medical certificates) which has been controlled by the Mayor since the hotels were.compulsorily ciosed, was yesterday taken over by Captain Gibbs, of the medical branch of the Defence Department (the head cf which.'is Surgeon-General Henderson), and vas placed in charga of a' uniformed sergeant of the Medical Corps, who curried on in the Mayor's room, under the direction of Mr. Israel, who has been acting as dispenser for the city 6ince the necessity arose. . .

One little difficulty has occurred in the matter of giving out supplies. Some of the doctors prescribe spirits for certain patients, and such prescriptions cannot bo attended to during thb iiisht hours owing to the closing down of the civic bar. The night prescriptions are attended to by the emergency dispensary in Cambridge Terrace (managed by Mr. ,W. Gillies), who yesterday had to requisition from the Mayor's room a supply of brandy in order to keep faith with the needy public. The difficulty of his position—and Mr. Gillies has been one of the busiest men at night-timd in "Wellington during the past week—was recognised, and he was, permitted to purchase the supplies he needed for the | night pharmacy. :
