LOSS OF WAGES DURING THE EPIDEMIC
. A PLEA FOR WORKERS. Hardships are being inflicted on all classes of- the community by the epidemic restrictions. Mr. Witty made an appeal in tho House yesterday on behalf of the workers in the shops and factories in his town of Christchurch, who have been compelled to lose part of their/working time because of the order of the public health officer that all shops and factories should close at 3 p.m. every day. • Mr. Witty 6aid that the two hours per daj r was being lost to ivue workers, although tho Arbitration Coiut awards in their' industries stipulated for a. weekly wage. _ The Minister of Public Health said that the right of the public health officer to take the action he had taken was absolute, and with his decision he as Minister would not interfere. The matter of the pay of employees was one that concerned the Minister of. Labour. Mr. Massey, Minister of Labour, said that as the question was ' a legal ono he would not answer it off-hand, but if the question were submitted in writing lie would forward it to tlii Solicitor-General for his opinion.
