THE PEACE CONGRESS
Sir,—ls it not a trifle vainglorious on the part of Air. Afassey and' Sir Joseph .Ward to stress the importance of getting away at an early date? The question is not whether they individually should bo there, but whether New Zealand should bo represented at the Peace Conference, and surely there is no ground to suppose that New Zealand cannot be represented if. the legislative work here requires the personal attention of those who are called • "the two leaders." We hear by cablegram that President Wilson is likely to leave about the beginning of next month to be present at. the opening session, which in that case would not probnbly be Inter than the end of the year or 'beginning of January. The initial session will probably be niainly ceremonial, and New Zealand can very well be represented by the High Comniis-. sioncr, There can be no doubt now that most of the work of the congress will be clone by comriittees of experts defining boundaries, letails of partition, assess- - ment of injuries to Allies, and such like. Questions of policy of larger scope cannot come on for determination for a considerable time. Happily the one question in which New Zealand is most concerned—the future of Samoa—is no longer in doubt. Germany under no conceivable conditions will have her one-time colonics restored. Why, then, the haste of "the two leaders" to leave the really important work of the session? One thing thoy may be quite sure about is that if they neglect their duties here the electors in (heir respective districts and throughout 1 tho Dominion generally will not forget the fact—l am, etc., NATIONALIST.
