THE WAR LEGISLATION BILL
Sir,—l have not seen .it noticed as yet in the criticisms of this Bill that as regards property which might be acquired by aliens it deals only with land. I h'ope this is not an intentional limitation. The greatest inroads in the past . in the way of "peaceful penetration by the Germans have been in acquiring the control of companies, both public and privateoncorporated. companies, by shareholders either undisguisedly or through • agents or trustees. , Surely the door should-be closed in this direction as well as with regard to land, where, the danger is less, because it is more open. A necessary provision, whether as to real or personal property, would be to declare all trusts in favour of aliens to • be illegal. Unfortunately there are British' subjects who are not above acting as trustees or agents for Germane or any other* whose designs may not be patriotic-I am, etc., November 9.
