MAGISTRATE'S COURT

A short sitting of the Magistrate's Court was held yesterday morning. j For being found drunk two first offenders who failed to appear had their bail of 10s. each forfeited! Joseph Sullivan, with one previous, conviction, was convicted and discharged, the Magistrate remarking that the man received a crack on the head which cught to be punishment enough. George Pinnock and.Jame3 Holder, two watersido workers, pleaded guilty, the former to stealing two woollen vests, value 205., the property of the Sha.wSavill Company, and the latter to receiving a shirt, valued at the property of the same company, knowing the same to have been stolen. Jtr. H. F. O'Leary appeared for both accused and admitted that the offence committed by Pinnock, who was a married man, wa9 regarded as serious, but pointed out that'the . man did not broach the cargo, for that was done by somebody else.' Holder's offence .was of a minor charactcr, and counsel suggested that on such a, day tho men should not be sent to prison, 'but be fined. The Magistrate said that Pinnock was guilty .if a mean theft, for the goods were being, shipped by the Red Cross Society. He could not treat tho caso as on" for a tine, and • therefore sentenced Pinnock to fourteen days' imnrisonnienl. Holder's offence was different. T.t was a minor offence, and he would be fined .£5, .in default fourteen days' imprisonment.
