COST OF LIVING
SOJfE ENGJJSH PRICES.
A letter received from a young lady whose father has a grocery business in A.bergele, North Wales, casts some light on the enormous cost of necessities of life in England, and incidentally, illustrates how very fortunate we in. New Zealand must consider ourselves. The letter reads'as follows :--
"Things are very dear here. .Everything you think about is dear. It is no use keeping a purse in these .days as money goes so soon. Here you have to pay'ijd. and even Jb&, for an egg: fid. P'H , quart for milk (they say it will be Bd. this winter), 2s. 4.d. per lb. for butter, Is. 3d., per lb. for apples, Is. id. per lb. for tomatoes. AVe get' half n, pound of,' sugar per head per week, ?oz. fbutter; 4oz. margerine per week, 2oz. tea, 2oz. lard, and 7oz. bacon. There are no currants, raisins, or sultanas to bo had anywhere, but we can do without them with this war, can't we? Wβ have to keep ration books, one for each customer for sifear, butter, lard, margorine,' bacon, and meat. They are all the" foods that ■ arc rationed at present; but, after all, we get enough of everything; and we must not grumble, knowing how much worse it is with many."
