Countess of Liverpool Fund. A ineoting of the Countess of Liverpool Fund Committee was held in the Town Hall oh Monday morning, the Mayoress (Mrs. J. P. Luke) presiding. There were, also presont: Mesdaines W. 1\ Masscy, Maoarthur, Lang, Murphy, Findlay, Tripp, Tripe, A. Crawford (hon. secretary), Miss Eobin, and Miss Eraser. A resolution. was passed to the effect that tho committee placed on. record their gratitude and-Admiration for the gallant conduct of our troops in the field during the whblo period of the war. It was reported at the meeting that a largo supply of blankets, of which a large number were received from tho Waifon and tho Hawko's Bay Countess of Liverpool Fund, Jind been- forwarded for tho usn of the moii at the front. A strong appeal was made by. tho president for members to assist- the Maoris on Friday in • tlioir 'sti'eot dayfoi' the tonofit of (he Maori soldiets. ' Mrs. Luke also asked for tho co-opqration of all present in furthering the appeal which is being made very shortly to raise for.the Returned Soldiers' Club, nh institution which does valuable work for tho returned men and which is at the present time iii need of funds. A voto of thanks was passed to M'im jVacarthur, Miss France, and Miss Kelly for thoir donation of $7 3s. 2d. | to the Maori Soldiers' Fund,
Bazaars. "" ,• Yesterday afternbdh a bazaar was opened iu the Kiosk at Oriental Bay in aid of tho St. Barnabae's Church vicarage funds by tht; Mayor, Mr. J. P. Luke, .M.P., C.M.G. Mr. Luke was accompanied by his daughter, who was presented with a bouquet by little Miss Kathleen Hall, and ho was received by the 1 Rev. Mr. Askew and Mrs. Franklin. Mr. Askew formally welcomed tho Mayor in the course of a brief speech, to which ho replied, and Mr. Brooke-Taylor also spoke, after which visits were mado to the different etalls; and the important business of the afternoon waa begun. Tho stalls made an excellent display, and had been most attractively .arranged. In oharge wero the following:—Plain aiid fancy, Mesdames. Frankliiij Blythe, Cox, and Morrison; produce, Mesdames Innis, Grlx, and Lauchliui; fishpond, Mrs. Kier, Miss Greenwood, and Miss Taylor; cSkes, Mrs. Lattey, Mrs. Adams, and Miss Jacobsen; eweete, Miss Uawnsley, assistediby tho'Sundny School children; Itowerfl, Mrs. Vickery, Mrs. Petherick, and Miss Eglinton. An entertainment was gtvon in the evening, and tho bazaar will bo continued to-day. A very well-organised salo .of work was opened at Fullford's Hall, Brooklyn, yesterday afternoon by the Countess of Liverpool, who was presented with a beautiful bouquet.of. flowers, by Hugh iient, a , very small Boy Scout, only four years of ago. The Brooklyn Scouts formed a guard of honour, and Her Excollenoy was received and welcomed, by tho vicar.. Tho proceeds of the bazaai" aro to be devoted to the Church of England funds. Tho salo will bo open again this afternoon and evening* when a concert will bo given.
District Nursing Guild. Tho monthly meeting of tho committeb of the District Nursing Guild of St. John was hold on Monday afternoon at tho residence of Mrs. w. H. S. Moorhouso. Thero werfe present: Mesdames 'Moorhouse (presiding),. Tripe Corrigan, Gibboils, Misses' libbieson, Maeauurew, and Edineades (hon. secrotnry). Apologies were received., from .Mesdanies .Balcombo Brown and Pearson. Miss M. Macnndrow, who waa elected to represent tho Wellington Nursing Division on the committee in place of Mrs. Barclayi resigned, was welcbnied by the president on behalf of tho committee. . The report of the nurses showed that twelve patients were registered during tho month, nino discharged, twenty-one remaining. Two hundred and . ninety-throe visits wero paid. Gifts pi clothing, etc., were acknowledged with thanks, from Mesdamos Mobrhoude, Thompson, Dennistoh, Rolherhani (10s. for truit), Ngaio Stocking League, three anonymous donors, St. Andrew's Church Committeo. A subscription of £1 was received from Mrs. Tripe.
Tho breaking-up of Miss Carwell Cooko's dancing classes takes place on Saturday afternoon in the Town Hall,
the proceeds being Jianded over to tho Navy League Sailors' Comforts Fund. The children will appear in the dross which they ordinarily wear at the classes, bilt colour will be eunplifed by tho decorations, which will be carried but by the D.I.C. Home-hiade sweets and ices will be sold, and. afternoon tea will be supplied. Little Miss Marjorie Beuuib will recite verses specially. written for the occasion,. and four small sailor boys will hold a flag, in readiness for which everyone attending is advised to bring with them a supply of pennies.
Mrs. Howard B. Jackson, who has beon staying in Wellington awaiting the arrival of a ship fo which her husband was attached as dental officer, ha 9 now returned, accompanied by Captain Jackson, to their homo in tho Wairarapa.
On Thuradny, November 7, in St. Thomas's Hall, Newtown, at 3 p.m., tho Bishop of Wellington will open tho annual grund bazaar held in aid of St. Cuthbert's, Bevhampore. An' energetic band of workers liavo been engaged for eonie' inouths malting preparatiOhs, and considerable success has attended their efforts to provide tho muterials necessary for an attractive and woll-stockod.bazaar. No charge will bo mado for admission in tho afternoon, but in tho evening, when songs and.marohes will bo jrivon by tho Sunday Scliool children, the prlco of admission will bo sixpence.
RETURNED SOLDIERS , APPEAL NEED FOB .62000. A meeting of the Ladies' Committee which has been fdrmed in connection with tho appeal to ba mode on behall of tho "Wellington Returned Soldiers' Association's Club was held in the Mayor i room of the Town Hall yesterday aftw*' noon, tha Mayoress (Mrs.' J. P. Luke) presiding. There was a very good attendance of members, Including friends and helpers who are willing to assist 'in • furthering the appeal in every possible way, and during the course of tho meeting several outside oft'era of help werereceived, and much keejihess shown in tho matter by those in tho room. A brief outline of what had been achieved at tho previous meeting was given by Mrs< Luke for the boiiefit.of new members of the committee. She explained that the whole of the city had been divided into sections for can'vassiiig purposes, aud cards are being issued with which the workers will collect from the people in the respective areas assigned to them anything from, a shilling upwards, whatever they feel they can give. Bach card is to have spaco for twenty names, and will represent a pound in value when filled in—that ie, sit the rate of a shilling s name. . . The assigning of the different areas was dealt with, and tho following have so far been allotted ;-Tho Terrace, Mre. J. Findlay; Aurora Terrace, Wellesley Road, and.Bolton Street, Mrs. Baldey and Miss Sennie; Northland, Mrs. Martin j Botanical Garden. Boiul awl Salamanca Hoad, Mm. J,. '• A number ol returned soldiers, and other helpers gavo their services, and as a re-' suit a sum of X3B was realised for tho fund, and had they been able to secure a larger supply still more would havo been disposed Ribbon badges were, sold as well. Mrs. Luko also stated 1 that arrangements had now been complotftl so that they would have on hand at tho Town-Hall a big'.supply-of these flags and badges ready to bo sold.in the streets when next important news came through.. Poonlo are advised to look for the Mayor's stamp upon them ("J. P. Luke"), as stamped onos only aro authorised as being for the benefit of the returned soldiers • appeal. Apologies were received for unavoidable alwonco from Mrs. Bodes,-Mrs. Porter, Mrs. Moorhouse, Mrs. Rose, and Mrs. Martin. Mre. Martin has offered to take charge of a flower stall on the first clay of tho appeal. ■In opening the meeting, Mrs. Luke referred,to the very great pleasure with which Monday's hews iii regard to Austria had been received, and said how' much it had meant to many homes in. this country, as well as to tho Empire. She also made a strong plea for the Returned Soldiers' Club, an Institution which was doing invaluable work for the men coming back, w and which deserved all the support which could bo given it.
