SUCCESSFUL MEETING

Tho weather yesterday .morning gave ptoiniso of being fine, but this promise was not altogether realised, for in tho afternoon the wind rose to half a gale and was cold. 'Notwithstanding this many hundreds of men, women, and children spent tho day at Newtown I/m'fcTha sports programme was a lengthy one, aud was varied in character. Tliero were excellent entries for all events, especially for the baby 6how and the dancing competitions. The Wellington Pipe Band, under Pipe-Major J. Taylor, •played through the city, starting from the Government Buildings, and with the Waterside Workers' Band provided thomusic for tlie day. The United lurniture Trades Union hnd a side-show of their -own in the form pf a quoit and sand "shy," the prizes being -acceptable articles made by the union members. All the young children .were given toys, much to their delight. The proceeds of the day go to swell tho funds for the' erection of the proposed Trades Hall. The Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) was present at the gathering in tho afternoon. ! The leading officials'* of the snorts .gathering were: President, Mr. M. J. Heardon; director of sports, Mr. i. W. Lesliestarter, Mr. J. CARNIVAL AT THE HUTT. The Hutt Valley Labour Day carnival was held under perfect -weather conditions, on the Petone ltecreation Ground, and. was. well patronised. A feature of the procession, Which left tho railway station at 10 a.m., was the number of children taking part and the excellence of their fancy' dresses. The procession was led by'the Petone Municipal Bond, and consisted of the various fire brigades of the Hutt Valley, decorated tradesmen's vehicles, decorated horses, iicycles, and handcarts, and children in faiicy dress. The following are the procession ' prizes Decorated tradesmen's vehicles: Cook and Cook, 1; Thomson and Lewis, 2; AV-hi taker, jun., 3; — Unwin, i. Mounted adult: J. Newton, 1; J. Hunter, 2.
