——♦ SETTLERS AND WORKERS. Tiie annual report of the jState Advances , Office for the year ended March 31 last / shows that the total number of applications for advances to settlers during the year wtvs 871, the amount advanced being ■£286,395. Auckland provincial district, headed the list with 360 applications, and ,£110,370 authorised, and Wellington came next with 209 applications, and .£77,780 authorised. Applications from Canterburytotalled 114, and advances ,£36,005, while for Otago the figures were 27 and ,£7765 < respectively. The total advances current at the end of the financial _ year were • 10,594, the amount involved being ,£7,587,337. The number of advances actually made to'settlers during ;the year was 739, totalling ,2298,730. The gross profits for the year were .£61,671, and the net profits .£51,112. ' During the year the advances to workers branch dealt with 411 applications, the amount of the advances authorised being ,£129,710. The principal figures were: Wellington, 114 applications and ,£46,125 in advances; Auckland, 109 applications and ,£35,660 in advances; Canterbury, 85 applications and .£27,120 in advances; Otago, 15 applications and i' 3115 m advances. The total advances to workers now current are 9511, totalling ,£2,636,189, while there were actually paid over during the year 378 loans, totalling i 125,805. The gross profits for the 3' ear ,rer ? • ,£13,205, giving a net profit of £9705, ot which -£7832 was applied in writing down loan charges.
