London, October 22. The Victoria Cross has been awarded to Sergeant Samuel Forsyth, New Zealand Engineers. He showed conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty in an attack, bearing its objective, Sergeant Forsyth'.s company tame under heavy niacliine-gun lire, anil through;his dashing leadership and ' total disregard of danger three machine-gun positions were rushed and their crews 'taken prisoner before they could inflict many casualties. During a subsequent advance Sergeant Forsylhs company came under heavy lire from several machine-guns,- of which lie located two by a. daring recojinaisR.ince. In an endeavour to gaiu support from a tank, Sergeant Forsyth was wounded, but in the face of the heaviest fire ho endeavoured to lead the tank lo a favourable position. The tank, however, was put out of action. Sergeant Forsyth then organised the tank's crew and several of his men into sections aud led them to a position where the enemy machiiie-gi'i.ners could be outflanked. lie was always under fire, but brought about the retirement of Ihe machine-guns and enabled the British advance to continue. At this moment a. sniper killed Sergeant Forsyth. Throughout his courage, coolness, and great power of initiative proved an invaluable incentive to , all; and saved many casualties.—Aus.-N.Z.
