CHARGES AGAINST A MAORI, By Telegraph—Press Association. Wanganui, October 16. A. novel scheme of raising money, adopted by a young educated Mactff, Waatu Matonga, was revealed at the Magistrate's Court, when he pleaded guilty to ten charges of obtaining money by means of valueless cheques, amounting to £73 Is. Tradesmen at Wanganui, Marton, and Stratford were the victims. At one time accused had a small banking accountat Waipukurau, and before commencing operations he faked his pass-book to represent a largo sum to his credit. Tho book was uroduced when the cheques were issued to support the suggestion that accused . was a man of means. Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M., sentenced him- to twelve months' reformation detention.
