LOWER HUTT BOROUGH

The . fortnightly, meeting of the Lower Hiitt Borough Counoil was held last evening, and in the unavoidable absence of the Mayor (Mr. E. P. Rishworth), Councillor J. W. M'Dougall presided. There were present Councillors W. Cotton, AV. G. Meldriiin, W. Walton, J. Brasell, S. G. Clcndoa, W. Kerr, A. West, and A. Hobbs.

A letter was received l'rom the Miuister of Internal Affairs forwarding a copy of the Gazette containing an Or-der-in-Council mailing War Regulations in regard to the sale of milk in boroughs. The Hutt Meat Company wrote asking that a 20-light gas meter be installed in their premises- to furnish power to drive a 4j li.p. gas engine. It was decided to allow tho matter to fitand over until after tho special meeting of the council to consider the gas question. The council, at the request of tho honorary organiser of the National Service League, passed a. resolution requesting the Efficiency Board to establish four momorial workshops in New Zealand to provide training and permanent work for disabled soldiers.

The recommendation ef the No. 1 Committee that a by-law he made providing for tho compulsory numbering of houses in the borough streets, to be made operative in. such streets as the rounoil may from time to time deem advisable was adopted. The report of the special committee on tno milk supply question \ v as adopted. The committee recommended that tho milk vendors and suppliers of the borough bo invited by circular and advertisement- to meet the council in conference to discuss the position in order that an adequate supply of milk be assured for tfi'e inhabitants of the borough in view of the possibility of thin beiirg interfered with as the result of tho Wellington Cily Council making contracts for the purchase of milk for the city supply. According to the engineer's report the amount of ffas purchased from Petone during the seven months of the prfl-ent, financial year was 11.039.000 cubic feet, showing an increased consumption of 3.155,000 cubic feet over the corresponding months of last year.
