SEAMEN'S WAGES
WAR RISK BONUS GRANTED.
The executive of the Federated Seamen's Union met representatives of the> shipowners in Wellington yesterday to discuss a demand made by the.union (or increased wages. The union had' asked for n substantial addition to' wages in view of war risks and the rising cost of living.
After discussion the conference) adopted an arrangement on the lines laid down recently by the Common-' wealth Shipping Board. The shipowners agreed to grant a war risk homis to sailors, liremen, and trimmers of £3 per month, and to ordinary seamen of£2 per month in vessels employed in the following danger areas:—South. Atlantic, Ocean, north of 35 degreqs of! south 'latitude ;.-North Atlantic Ocean,' including the Gulf "of''Mexico northwest, north and east of the Atlantic* entrance of thoi Panama Canal; the Irish' Sea, including St. George's Channel, Bristol Channel, and North Channel; the North Sea or English Channel; the Mediterranean Sea, including the Straits of Gibraltar. In vessels 'employed in other'waters a war risk bonus" of 30s. per'' month has been granted to sailors, firemen, and trimmers, and to ordinary seamen of 20s. per month.
