LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
CHINA'S ASSISTANCE Sir,—As a patriot of China and a great friend of England, and having recently arrived from Fiji and Auckland with the object of visiting my countrymen here in Wellington, I feel it my duty to point out that China's' assistance to the Allies has received little publicity. Though she has been at war with Germany, and has taken active a part as circumstances allow, is China recognised as an ally? During my stay in Wellington I have received reports that some days ago flags of tlio Allies, except China's, were* displayed on the public buildings of this city. I would like to know whether the omission was intentional or otherwise, but it caused much comment among the Chinese here, who. to my knowledge, without exception, are loyal to Great Britain.
China has taken stringent measures against German residents. All Germans in the Chinese Government service have been expelled, and settlements have been reoccupied and property snd ships' confiscated. A Chinese shipowner at the beginning of the war handed over to tlie British Government a number of steamers for transportation purposes. China has from time to time sent troops to Europe—many have been already trained to the fighting line. In conclusion, I must add that it would only he fair to display our Chinese Republic flag side by side with the flags of our other Allies—l am, etC,, / SIDNEY. H. LOWE. /
