Telegraphic arrangements have been made by tho Gomnment by which it is hoped to alleviate delays in the dispatch of mesesagcs for relief in connection with tho disasters by sea or land, such as occurred in regard to the wreck of the Wimmera, through the wires not being open far use after ordinary office hours. In a letter to the Mayor of Auckland, in answer to the deputation which waited upon him in .Inly last, the Acting-Prime Minister. Sir Juntas Allen, states that he referred the matter to the Acting-Post-niastcr-Goneral, who has advised him that tho necessary extension bells are to bo installed at the telephone offices of the small coantnl ports in tho Auckland district, which will enable the assistanco of the telephonists to be obtained at night for tho summoning of help outside office hours.
