SPANISH "GRIPPE" IN SOUTH AFRICA
AN ALARMING EPIDEMIC. ' (Rec. October 6, 5.5 p.m.) Capo Town, October 5, The spread of Spanish influenza is assuming unprecedented proportions. Nothing like it has ever been known. Every industry and public department is more or less seriously affected. The epidemic is apparently reaching its height on the Rand, but is increasing at Cape Town, whilo at Kimberley two hundred deaths arc reported amongst the natives—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. October 6, 11 p.m.) New York, October 5. 1 Reports from Havana s-tato that nineteen persons died of Spanish influenza on board the Spanish steamer Alfonso on September 13. en route i'rom Spain to the West Indies.
