ORIGIN OF THE POLYNESIANS
By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, October 2. Professor J. MacMillan Brown, of Cliristchure.il, who returned by the Malum, states that, as a result of ethnological investigations in Hawaii, lie bad abandoned the idea that the Polynesians originally came from the Malay Archipelago and India. He was of the opinion that tho Polynesians ','ame tlirough Japan. There were elements in Hawaiian culture which supported this theory. He described several native characteristics in support of his contention. In Japan he had seen a large number of men of great stature, who were'a race apart from the Japanese of the present day. These tall men indicated an ancestry neither Japanese nor. Mongol inn.. The present race of Japanese were descendants of Ainu, who came through Siberia and drove out tho then inhabitants, who spread through tho stepping-stone line of islands, tlirough the Mariannes and Carolines into Polynesia. As a result o 1 his visit to Hawaii, he concluded that the natives of that particular group were rapidly dying out; as a. people they .were very decadent. He was of opinion that the decadence began prior to the European settlement, but had become much more rapid since that period. The natives were flocking into the cities, and modem civilisation was overwhelming them morally and physically.
