THE CONFERENCE PROPOSAL
CITY COUNCIL'S REPLY
Tho Government's proposal for a confercnco to .settle tlie tramway dispute '\vns considered by the City Council in committcc last ,iiight. After tlio meeting the Town Clerk stated that a letter embodying the following would be sent in reply to the Acting-Prime Minister's communication:—
Tho council is pleased to see that the Government recojjniscs that the tramwaymen are worldly under an agreement which has about twelve/ months' unexpired period. The council expresses regret that although the 11111011 has been breaking the agreement during the fourteen days past the Government took no action till September 30.On compliance by the union with the condition that pending 'the, conference the men must ininjediately resume the council will be prepared to meet the union re-
presentatives.
Although tho union has replied to the Acting-Prime Minister stat-
ing that they would accept the conditions suggested with regard to the holding of a conference (in-! eluding the condition requiring thei immediate resumption of work), they have not yet complied with the conditions.
