THE NEW WARFARE

LETTER FROM CENERAL CODLEY,

Sir James Allen (Acting : Prime Minister and Minister of Dercncc) has received a letter, dated August 9 last, in which Lieutenant-General Sir Alexander Godley (General Officer Commandng the New Zealand Forces on tho 'Western front) states: —"The Division has had practically no fighting at all since l'asschendaele last October, and is therefore one of, the divisions which are strongest and'fittest in every way; and, now that tho tide has turned and we have regained the initiative, ..I hope that the opportunity of using it audi all the other good divisions in pursuit of tho Roche will come soon. 1 was very sorry the New Zealand Division was not with me when 1 was down in the Champagne, and that, the, only New Zealand representatives were a squadro;i of the Ulago 'Mounted Rifles, tho Cyclist Battalion, tho New Zealand members of my stall', and tho Area Employment Company. But they all'did extremely well, and it was a great tiling after all to have that, amount of the New Zealand Expedi- j tionary Force represented. The Ocago Mounted Rifles and the Cyclists did oxcellent work. . , . AVe had quite a different. kind of fighting from what it has been hitherto; and eventually it became open warfare, attacking in extended order, the batteries support-, ing the battalions, and brigades of ar-i tiilcry following'up and supporting tile, infantry brigades, and tho whole thing very much more pleasant in every way: ... Of one thing you may be quitb sure, and that is, broadly speaking, everything in connection with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force has gono extremely wcl|, and we are quite satisfied with all that has b2en done for us."

Complimentary reference to the work of the small New Zealand force engaged in the Champagne sector was mado in ail order of the day published by the French Army Commander, linder whose orders General Godley wa:j acting.

RETURNED SOLDIERS' ME3SAGE TO GENERAL GODLEY! The, secretary of the Returned Soldiers' "Association has sent the. following letter to trie Minister of Dr,fence:— "My association has learned deepest satisfaction of. the victorious advance by the Allied troons on all fronts, and would esteem it a favour if you would kindly arrange, for the transmission of the followijip cablegram to General Godley:— I 'Tho New Zealand Returned Soldiers' iAssucintiou loams with pride and satisfaction of the latest exploits of tha New Zealand Division, and requests'yon to convey to Marshal Focli its .'hearty congratulations on the snleii'.lkl successes achieved on all fronts.'
