APPEALS FROM THE BALLOT

FORTY HEARD YESTERDAY

The Second Wellington Military Service Board sat in Wellington yesterday to deal with a list of pver forty appeals. The board consists of Messrs. J. W. Poynton, S.M. (chairman), F. Curtice, and T. A. Bamber. The Wellington Gas Company appealed for John K. Mansfield, gas stoker, on the ground that it was almost impossible to get competent gas stokers. Decision was reserved sine die. A sine die adjournment was made in the case otf Francis E. Duggan, wireless telegraphist. Appeals wore made by Cable and Co. j for Henry deorge Sh'ardlow, blacksmith, Petone, and Percy Johnson, metal worker's assistant.- Decisions were reserved. John N. Griffiths, Customs agent, was appealed for by his employer on the ground of undue hardship. Tho chairman said that undoubtedly the caso was one of hardship, and the board reserved decision sine die. Leave till January was allowed in the case of Walter Marshall, clerk, who was appealed for by C. J. AVard and Co. C. J. Ward and Co. also appealed for Sydney Page, bootmaker, who was concerned in the making of military boots. Decision was reserved sine die. Decision was reserved in the cases elf the. following plumbers:—Frederick William Harrison; Charles C. Aitken, Petone; aiirt Thomas W. Warburton, Lower Hutt. Tho chairman said that the hoard had a letter from the secretary of the Auckland Plumbers' Union, to the effect that there were- twenty . plumbers there, who were out of employment. Decision was reserved. In , the case of William James poo'lwin, plumber, Upper Hutt, an adjournment till November was made. Temporary exemption was sought by Bert Tromain, builder, Potoi?e. The Petone Borough inspector stated that Tromain had a number of fire-escapes to fix to'buildings. Leave till February was gjven. John Victor Solomon, warehouseman, was exempted under the solo surviving son clause. Ho had had a brother killed in the war and another brother badly gassed. • . . ' , Thomas L. Hawker, tinsmith and drainlayer, appealed, and urged that ho did work of importance to dairy factories, ptc. Garbitt, warehouseman, was appealed for by his mother, who. said that the reservist's only brother, who enlisted with the Eighteenth Reinforcements, had been killed. The appeal wis'allowed. : A car adjuster, William John Ai> drews,.was transferred to Class D of the Second Division. Leav.3 till February was granted Thomas Batie, dairyman, Lower Hutt. An appeal by John E. Bamscy, sales manager, Seatoun, was adjourned till the November session of thf> board. Frank H. Monk, farmer, Reikorartri, was given leave till March, to enable him to carry out certain work on the farm. Decision was reserved sine die in the case of William Henry Boyes, electrician. . Bartholomew Millar, ■ telephone linesman, who had had a brother killed at the frort, and had four other brothers there, had his appeal adjourned sino die. Alfred J. Griffiths, master plumber, who said that his partner and all the staff with the exception of one apprentice, had been called up, lodged an appeal. ;The chairman said they could riot send a man to camp in such circumstances, and decision was reserved sine die.
