WAR RISKS OF SAILORS

Tho Minister of Marine.(the Hon.;T., 31. Wilford) has approved of the insertion of a clause in the articles of all of tho Union Company's ships to give tho. benefit: of the Imperial compensation scheme for crews. This clause, to which the company, the Merchant Service Guild, and' tlie Marino Engineers' Institute;, have agreed, is: "It is hereby agreed by' and between the owners of :the ship herein named.and such of Hie members'of the crew : , as' may- t-riter into tliese articles in New Zealand or Australia that the provisions of the Imperial' Board of Trade War ltisks [.Compensation Scheme.for.§eamen shall ■ be deemed to bo '.incorporated in and I form part- of these articles of agrce■ment, aiid thatsuch members of the crew as aforesaid,; or, in the case of deaths, their dependants, shall in cases coining within the. terms of the said .scheme be entitled : -to.compensation in accordance witlv the'provisions of tlie 6aid' scheme." The arrangement wil) operate from October 1. ; , While the Union Company has agreed i.tb the scheme,' the owners of small coastal steamers have asked the Gov,ernment if they are liable for the compensation, and how far the clause is applicable to them, Tho Minister of Marine has cabled to the authorities in' England on tho question, and is now 'awaiting a reply.
