WANGANUI TRAMWAY SYSTEM

A SERIOUS BREAKDOAVN. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wanganui, October 1. A serious breakdown occurred in the tramway system yesterday .evening through a bad accident to tho main engine,- which has been heavily overloaded during the whole war period through the Home authorities' refusal to find, shipping space' for tho . new power plant ordered over four years ago. The auxiliary engine was able to maintain a curtailed service during meal hours only. Great inconvenience •and loss to business will result, to say nothing of the serious shortage in tramway revenue, unless tho situation. is soon restored. The council has set up an independent commission of inquiry into tho accident. The tram staff is strenuously working to ensure a better service. Tho council also telegraphed to the Hon. A. M. Myers asking him to again appeal to the Imperial Ministry of Munitions, urging the shipping of the plant ordered.
