STORAGE FOR WOOL

NEW SHED BEING ERECTED

NOT FOR PERMANENT STORAGE

At last evening's meeting of the Harbour Board, Mr. J. G. t'obbo said that in regard to the storage o! wool there was an .uneasy feeling in the country, owing to the possibility of not being able to ship the wool. He wished to know wnat accommodation there was for the storage of wool. The chairman (Mr. C. E. Daniell) said that at present the board were arranging for the erection of a. new shed to take the place ol" the one that had been commandeered by the Munitions Department. The bniidirg material had been ordered. The bulk of it had been secured cm the West Coast, but they had experienced difficulty i" getting'shipment. They were indebted to Mr: Adams, df the Munitions Department; who was assisting them'to get the. timber across so that they could go ahead. They hoped to get it within the. next t»Vo weeks. The foundations of the building were already in. When completed it would hold' 10,000 biles of wool. In reply to a further query from Mr. C'obb'e, Mr. Daniell made it clear that the shed was not being built for the permanent storage of wool—it was only transitory storage. It was not the policy of the board to provide permanent 'storage, and what had been done had met all requirements ill the past. The Munitions Department would not replace the building commandeered, ao thay Tiad to do it themselves. The storage so provided was only ifor the wool to be loaded on to ships. That the war demanded of. them.'and-they were trying to fill the. breach. In 1917-18 the board had 14,000 bales on hand. Mr.. Darnell also stated that the dumping plant was being taken out of K shed (the ■ commandeered building) for re-erection in the new shed.
