Wounded five times in the battle of the Marne, Gerard Meister won the annual swimming contest across the river Peine, a distance of 350 yards. The temperature stood at about th* freezing point, and the bridires awl banks of the river worn crowded with spectators, who cheered the .swimmers us they plunged through the icy water. Meister won tbis event in 1013.
