Wounded five times in the battle of the Marne, Gerard Meister won the annual swimming contest across the river Peine, a distance of 350 yards. The temperature stood at about th* freezing point, and the bridires awl banks of the river worn crowded with spectators, who cheered the .swimmers us they plunged through the icy water.
