NOTES AND COMMENTS
' rßl' GLENCOE/I Sportsmen in both islands will be catered for to-morrow, when the Egmont and Ashburton meetings will be held. In both places racing will comnienco at 11.30 a.m. Entries for events to be decided at the Duncdin ■ Jockey Club's Sprinp: Meeting close with Mr. H..L. James on Friday, at 5 o'clock. Now that AußtTalian writers are discussing Gloaming's chances in the A.J.O. Derby, as a result of his Chelmsford . Stokes win. it is interesting to note the form of some of the horses who have competed in the Stakes, and afterwards, in the Derby. In the 1915 Chelmsford Stakes Wallace Isinglass was second and Cetigne unplaced, but in the' Derby the latter proved too good for the chestnut. • The folowing year Kilboy failed to get a placo in. the. Tattersall race (won by Sasanof), in which Thana was third, but in tho Derby the lattor was unplaced, whilst Kilboy won. Another unplaced horse in Wolaroi was a competitor in that year's Stakes, and though. ho failed in tho A.J.O. Derby, he made, amends a month later .when ho won the V.Ii.C. Derby. Biplane was among the unplaced division of the Chelmsford Stakes the following year, but he won the Derby in a canter. It will be seen that the .last three A.J.C.* Derbies have been won by horses unplaced in the Chelmsford Stakes, and it is quite poi-Trible that history may repeat itself this year. Amongst the winners at the recent Menangle meeting was Belinda, a. member of the ex-WclHngtonian, J. Whitwoi'th's team. Whitworth has a full team in work at Eandwick, and enjoys a fair mea. sure of success. Belinda started, favourite, and after, winning had to survive a protest for interference. There has ■been some comment in local sporting circles as'to who would bu likely to ride Gloaniin& in the Chelmsford Stakes. It now transpires that The Welkin gelding, who, with his allowance, would only have to' carry 6st. 101b.,- was ridden by D. O'Connor, an apprentice in J. Whitworth's Uandwiek stables. The imported horse King Offn. who is owned by' Messrs. Lionel Jtobertson and William Clarke, members of the London Stock Exchange, but who race a considerable number of horses in Melbourne, was heavily backed for tho Doona. Trial Handicap at' the Caulficld meeting, on September V, and he won'oasily. As a result of his. victory ho has now ousted Biplane from the position of favourite for the Caulficld Cuip. The Australasian record for nine furlongs was held, previous to Gloaming, improving on it on Saturday, by both Pcrkco and Woorak; that pair having done tho distance in lmiii. 52qaec. at Randwick in 1908 and 1914 • respectively. When Desert Gold made her iirst appearance ■ in Australia ,in the..St. Georgo Stakes, she left tho nine furlougs behind in imin. 5255ec.. which was a record for the Caulfleld track. At the Jtoorcneld Park fixture on Saturday, September 7, the ex-New Zealander, Bimeter, finished a bad third to Damo Acre and Wolaroi in an open sprint event. He started .favourite. A recent addition to P. D. Jones's team at lliccarton is a four-.year-old filly by Martinn from Stephanie. She is a sister .to Hornbeam, awl will raco in the colours of Mr. H. A. Knight, It is now said that trainer W. Hawthorne is to take Mr. W. I?. Kemball's t«am to Australia in time for the autumn meetings. Tho team will probably comprise Hymestra, Nanna, Snub, Missgold, Tasilkov, and perhaps the jumper Gladful. At present Hawthorne has fifteen horses under his charge at Ojpaki, all of which are owned by Mr. Kcmball. The following marcs havo been booked to visit Demosthenes these season:—Chakwana, Aurarius' (dam of Desert Gold), Jeanne d'Arc (Orleans), The Boyno (Itcwi Polo and Parana). Warscare (Estland and Finraark), Asteroid (Astrophpl), Culmination (Devotion), La Notte (Noctuiform and Midnight Sun), Float (Dribble and Pontoon), Tatters (Maori Mat), Ohuckle, Tino Atua, and Queen Lizzie. There will bo racing at Bosehill on Saturday, when amongst other events the Eosehill Guineas will be decided. It, is expected that members of New Zealand teams at present in Australia will bo given pipe-.openers at this meeting.
