AUCKLAND MERCHANTS' VIEWS. .Tho nbsencb of direct stoamer communication between Auckland and San Francisco was lately brought under the notice of the Union Company, by .thfAuokland Chamber of Commerce. It was stated that four steamers—two mail boats and two cargo' carriers—are trading between Wellington and San Francisco, and two sailing vessels are plying from southern ports, whereas Auckland shippers have no opportunity of sending cargo to the Unitod States direct. The company, in reply, stated that Auckland has a monopoly of the Vancouver service, which is carried on by two up-to-date ■ steamors, whereas Wellington has for its Eervice two older vessels and two smaller ones. The . .South . Island, it is added, has no direct service to San Francisco. In view of the depleted Btate of its tonnage, and the importance in the intorests of all concerned of making the most ellicicnt and eHcctive use of its, fleet, tho company is unablu to hold out any encouragement in regard to the chambers suggestion. . At Friday's meeting of the council of tho chamber, ~*the president, Mr. Robert Burns, said that the cargo spaco on the Vancouver mall steamers was allotted by tho Union Company pro rata among the tho ports of tho Dominion. Auckland, had, theroforc, no advantage over the southern ports. Though Auckland traders were allotted space in. the San Francisco steamers, they had to pay the coastal freight to Wellington upon their exports, Mr. S. A. Longuct. said that nearly all tne spaco on the Vancouver steamers was taken by the New Zealand and Canadian Governments, and practically, none was left for trading firms. Auckland should at least lmvo one San Francisco vessel out of every four. Mr. Burns said that in order to secure space in the Vancouver boats Auckland firms had to send to Sydney any cargo they wished to ship, ami get it olaced on board there. Mr. A. B. Bobortson, suggested that tlio _ San 1 ran, o1e«o steamors might make their final cull at.'Auckland. That would havo the advantage of easing the pressure on tlie coastal vessels, which were now over-taxed, and would entail very slight lobs of time on the voyage. It was resolved that an answer be-sent to the company embodying this decision.

The council of the Auckland Chamber I or Commerce laßt week received a letter | from Messrs.- A. B. I'atcrson and Com* j pany. Ltd.. urging that an endeavour should be made to arrange that the Japanese steamers now trading to Dominion porta should take adequate cargoes from New Zealand. It was stated in tho letter

that tho vessels now tako littlo moro than fungus from tho Doniiuion, and obtain tlioir main outward cargo in Sydney, whoreas they briug largo inward loaduigH from Japan. , „ Mr. W. Spiers is now purser on the Moana. Sir. I<. Duckworth came ashore lant week. After a' trood trip from Sydney the Moeraki horthed- at No. 1 Queen's Wharf at 4.10 p.m. yesterday. The trip to.
