THE BRITISH EMPIRE UNION

o '- APPROVAL OF ITS CONSTITUTION "I am directed," writes Colonel J. L. AVhceler, of Havelock North, Lon. secretary for the British Empire Union in New Zealand, "to forward to you the enclosed circular of-the New.Zealand branch of the British Empire Union and to state that my committee desires to ascertain whether the objects, aims, national and commercial policy of this union; as set forth in the circular, meet witlrtho approval of your Chamber." ' The- above, communication, received at yesterday's meeting of the Central Chamber, of Commerce, evoked a rather interesting discussion .■ ■The 1 president said lie did not knmv very much about the constitution of the i union, but he sounded a -warning note about the increasing nniltip]icii;y of such bodies. , • ■ ' Mr. Lionel Nelson said that perhaps he was not so anti-German as he should be, but he never did approve of tho Anti-German League here., and as far as he ! could see there was much ill l common ,between the two bodies. If they would do more to foster • -the League of Nations to bring this'war to a plose they would be doing more practical'good. -• - 1 - 1 ' Mr. L. A. Edwards-also spoke of the multiplicity of bodies, and also the multiplicity of subjects that were brought before the chamb'er to which they could riot possibly give the consideration tho subjects probably deserved. He was inclined'to agree with Mr. Nelson, but did not agree with him that they should threw the unionover. He was cf opinion that they should go carefully into its constitution and. sa.v what they approved and 'what they disapproved. That was the only way to do anything practical in such a case. On the motion of. the chairman it was decided-to;refer the letter to the Legis-, lative Committee for a report.
