JR. M. J. MACK A CANDIDATE WRIT TO BE ISSUED TO-DAY There aro'now six candidates in the field for tho Wellington Central vacancy, and thero is a possibility, that there will be a .seventh, The six- are Messrs. AV. T. liildrcth (tha Government nominee), P. Frasor' (tho Official Labour candidate), M. J. Mack,, who will stand as an independent Labour candidate, J. E. Fitzgerald, -who. announces himself as an Independent, A. H. Atmore, and L. J. F. Garmson (a,'returned soldier). T'te possible seventh is Jlr. Len. M'Keiizie, who will give his answer probably today. Ho intends to stand if he can make the.-necessary business arrangements. Mr. Mack made tlie announcement last night that he is coining into the fight- as an Independent Labour candidate, not nominated by any organisation of any kind. Mis entry into tho field is a challenge which means much for the Socialists, because Mr., Mack; is unquestionably a representative cf the, workers, and he is also solid on tho war. He is holding a meeting for tho'formation of .committees on Friday next.. Mr. Garmson announced himself yesterday as a candidate. He has not the official support of the Returned Sol-, diers' Association, which £■ s a body takes no part in politics. Returned soldiers must mako their .political selection without aid from the association. Nothing more lias been heard of Mr.. Atraoro since his telegram of a few evenings ago. Several of the candidates will, it is anticipated, fiml reasons for withdrawing from tho contest beforo the day of the poll. The Hon. AV. B. Herries announced last night that the writ for AVellington Central will issue to-day, which means that to-day is 'the' last day for enrolment. THE LABOUR CANDIDATE. At the Trades Hall last evening the result of tho selection of a Labour candidate was as follows: —P. Frnser, 1; J. Read, 2; 31. J. Re.udon, 3. Mr. Fraser had a clear majority over the other two candidates oh the first count. The ballot was taken on the' preferential- system.
