SECOND DIVISION LEAGUE
The weekly meeting of the National Executive of the Second Division League was held on Thursday, Mr. B>. A. Armstrong presiding. A letter was received from" the secretary of the Recruiting Board dealing _ with the league's complaints regarding the onus being placed on soldiers or tlieir dependants to notify insurance companies of financial assistance grants, and also the liability of policies lapsing through war risks not being ■ actually paid at time of embarkation. The letter stated that tho Financial Assistance. Board Rgreed with the stand taken by the league, and Was taking steps to have the matters remedied. So far as war loading was concerned the board was advising insurance companies that it would undertake to pay in future within seven days of the departure of the insured. The executive expressed its appreciation, of the hoard's attention to.the matter, and instructed the secretary to convey thanks on behalf of the league. A communication was received from the Christchurch League enclosing a letter sent to a reservist by the State Advances Department, in which it -was stnted that the Department had no authority to suspend or postpone payment of the principal or any portion of the instalment during a. soldier's ab'.ence on active service, and that the \ per' cent, rebate could not be allowed unless payments were made at due date. The executive expressed surprise at tuis pronouncement, and as it was contrary to statements made from time to time by tho authorities the secretary wiis instructed to bring the matter before the Superintendent of the State Advances Department. Advice was received that another case taken up by the league in which a soldier had been wrongly classified as on "home service", had been put right, and that the wife's allowance at the higher rate would be paid as from the date whon the soldier first entered camp as a fit member of the Expeditionary Force. A number of letters of tbanks from soldiers-and their ■ dependants for assistance received from the league '-were duly received. In view of the increasing work it was decided to open an additional office, and the secretary reported having secured ground lloor premises at No. 14 -Brandon Street, which will be the bureau of advice from Monday next.'
