HUTT COUNTY COUNCIL
PURCHASE OF A MOTOR-IiORRY. Tim monthly meeting of tho Hutt County Council was hold yesterday, when there were present Councillors J. Whiteman (chairman), W. J. Howell, M. AV. Welch, I l '. G. Cooper, V. Cavanagh, and AY. Galloway. A motion by Conncilldr Calloway, "That a resolution to purchase a twoton motor-lorry bo rescinded." gavo riso to a long and heated discussion. It appears that a trial of the, lorry, which is a secondhand one, had been mado sinco the council's meeting in August, and a special meeting was hold later to consider the question of purchase. At this special meeting, Councillors Howell and Cooper introduced the agent for tho owners of tho lorry, and, considering that tho vehicle was suitablo for tho requirements of tho council, a tentativo arrangement to purchase a,t £90D was reached. A'cstorday several councillors who wero not present at tho special meeting, and wlio had not previously seen tho lorry, strenuously objected to tho purchaso on the ground that tho -vehicle was nnswitablo, and that Councillors Howell and Cooper bad not the necessary authority to come to any arrangement. It was pointed out that those councillors had tho "support of-the chairman and of the majority of the council. Tho motion on being put was lost on the casting volt} of tho chairman. /
