ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH AND THE WAR
Sir,—lt seems a lamentable thing in these days, when the Allied nations are sweeping on so gloriously to victory, that a Bitter sectarian campaign is being carried on in our midst more relentlessly than ever; Does Mr. Elliott think that any sane person is going to believe that the Romish Church in any of the Allied countries is pro-German, when we see tho armies of the Allies led on to victory by devout Catholics, or, in the case of the British Army, by men who have near relatives in Catholic religious orders? Foch, tho brilliant marshal, attends the Popo's private Mass when in Rome, and has a brother ji Jesuit; Retain, tlie glorious defender of Verdun, journeyed to Loublando in Vendee, to consult Claire Forchaud, the new Catholic Joan of Arc; Mangin, who has scored such glorious and wonderful successes for the past two months, haß a sister a nun in tho same religious order as tho Sacred Heart Convent at Island Bay—are these men pro-German? Marshal Haisr's brother is a Redemptorist priest. Allcnby's uncle is tho Rev. Father Fletcher, a noted priest in Lou-
don. When the hearts of parents and: wives are bleeding for those who haverecently fallen in battle i£ it right p honourable to launch a bitter and violent campaign against tho religion of the Catholic portion of these sufferers rV , —I am, etc., ' j,a,la September 10.
