MERCHANT SERVICE WAR RISKS
COMPENSATION FOR DEPEND- ; ANTS WANTED. Athougli merchant'service men sailing in English-owned ships have since 1915 been covered against war risk by an Imperial Government scheme of compensation, no simihir scheme assures an allowance or pension to officers of a ■ colonial-owned ship or their dependants. ; Recently the Merchant Service Guild • received a letter from Mrs. Daniel, wife of the late chief officer of the Aparima, who pointed out that, although nino months had elapsed since the disaster to that vessel as the result of enemy action, she had received nothing m the way of compensation. Yesterday a. , special meeting of the guild was held to consider the position, and the lollowing motion was carried: lhat, o\f- : ing to the present war risk, the Merb chant Service Guild demands that nil " ships' articles be endorsed before (Jotober 1, with the conditions of the Imperial compensation scheme, and that companies be held responsible for the dependants in the interval of time occupied in filing np the business alter an accident."
